A Beginner's Guide to BSP Thread Sizes for Garden Taps
If you've ever stood in front of a garden tap with a hose connector in hand, only to find it won't fit no matter how hard you try, you're not alone. BSP thread sizing trips up thousands of homeowners every year, and the frustrating part is that the fix is usually simple once you know what you're looking at.
This guide walks you through everything you need to know about BSP threads, which sizes matter for outdoor taps and garden hoses, and how to make sure you buy the right connector first time.
What Does BSP Actually Mean?
BSP stands for British Standard Pipe, and it refers to a standardised thread form used on pipes, fittings, and taps across the UK and much of Europe. The system defines both the diameter of the thread and its pitch (the spacing between the thread ridges), so fittings from different manufacturers can reliably connect to one another.
When you see a tap or connector listed as "1/2 BSP" or "3/4 BSP", that number refers to the nominal bore size of the pipe, not the actual physical diameter you'd measure with a ruler. This catches a lot of people out. A 1/2 inch BSP thread, for example, has an actual outer diameter closer to 21mm. The nominal size is really just a label inherited from older pipe-making conventions.
There are two main types of BSP thread: BSPP (parallel) and BSPT (tapered). For garden taps and hose connectors, you'll almost always be working with parallel threads, which rely on a rubber washer or O-ring to create a watertight seal rather than the thread itself.
The BSP Sizes You're Most Likely to Encounter
For domestic and light commercial garden water supply, the most common BSP thread sizes are:
1/2 inch BSP is the standard size for the vast majority of domestic outside wall taps in the UK. If you've had a plumber fit a garden tap to your property, there's a very good chance it's a 1/2 inch BSP tap. Standard hose connectors from brands like Hozelock and Gardena are typically designed to work with these taps, though the connector itself often uses a 3/4 BSP thread on the tap end (more on that in a moment).
3/4 inch BSP is where things start to get a little confusing for beginners. The outlet (the external threaded spout where you attach your hose connector) on many garden taps, including the popular "Farmers Tap" style, is 3/4 BSP. Our standard brass garden tap connector for most outside wall taps is sized at 3/4 BSP for exactly this reason. So even if the tap body uses a 1/2 BSP inlet connection into the wall, the outlet you actually connect your hose to is often 3/4 BSP.
7/8 inch BSP is the outlet size found on the larger Farmers Tap. This is a chunkier, more heavy-duty tap commonly used on agricultural land, allotments, and commercial properties. It's a less common thread size, which means sourcing the right connector takes a little more care. We stock a dedicated 7/8 BSP garden tap connector for exactly this application.
5/8 inch BSP is a size you'll typically encounter on older garden taps, particularly those installed several decades ago. If your outdoor tap looks a bit dated and standard connectors keep leaking or not fitting, there's a reasonable chance it has a 5/8 BSP outlet. A threaded female connector in this size is the right solution.
1 inch BSP fittings are used on larger bore hoses and commercial water management setups. If you're running a 25mm (1 inch) hose for irrigation or connecting to a larger water supply system, you'll need 1 inch BSP fittings throughout.
How to Measure Your Tap Thread
You don't need specialist equipment to figure out your BSP size. The most reliable approach is to measure the outer diameter of the male thread on your tap outlet (the part the connector screws onto) with a set of digital calipers or a carefully used measuring tape.
As a rough guide:
- Around 20-21mm outer diameter points to a 1/2 BSP thread
- Around 26-27mm outer diameter points to a 3/4 BSP thread
- Around 30mm outer diameter points to a 7/8 BSP thread
- Around 33-34mm outer diameter points to a 1 inch BSP thread

Why Getting the Right Size Matters
Using a connector that's even slightly the wrong size creates real problems. An undersized connector won't thread on at all. An oversized one might seem to turn a few threads before binding or leaking constantly, even with PTFE tape applied. Neither situation is safe or acceptable for a pressurised water supply.
Brass connectors with a proper rubber washer seal are the right choice for garden tap connections. Brass is corrosion-resistant, durable in outdoor conditions, and compatible with the brass and chrome fittings found on most wall taps. Our connectors are also designed to be compatible with popular hose brands including Hozelock and Gardena, so you won't need to replace your existing hose equipment.
Choosing the Right Connector for Your Setup
Here's a quick summary to help you match your tap to the right connector:
- Standard domestic outside wall tap (1/2 BSP inlet): use a 3/4 BSP brass tap connector
- Farmers Tap or large outside tap (3/4 BSP inlet, 7/8 BSP outlet): use a 7/8 BSP connector
- Older garden tap: check the outlet diameter; you may need a 5/8 BSP connector
- Large bore irrigation or commercial hose: use a 1 inch BSP connector
All our garden tap connectors come with free 3-day delivery, and our taps are supplied with a brass hose connector included. If you're upgrading an outdoor tap at the same time, our brass WRAS-approved wall taps are available in both 1/2 BSP and 3/4 BSP (Farmers Tap) styles.
Getting It Right From the Start
Understanding BSP thread sizing isn't complicated once you know the basics. Most domestic installations involve either a 3/4 BSP or 7/8 BSP outlet, and matching your connector to that size is all it takes to get a leak-free, reliable garden water point.
