Starting in April 2025, average water bills in England and Wales will rise by £86, and overall bills are expected to climb by 36% between 2025 and 2030. This rise is largely driven by the need for water companies to address infrastructure issues, such as replacing aging pipes and reducing sewage pollution.

Water companies have argued that the increase in charges is essential to cover the cost of major improvements, including the replacement of leaking pipes and the reduction of sewage discharges into rivers and seas. The regulator, Ofwat, has agreed that higher prices are necessary for much-needed investment. However, the price hikes come at a time of increasing public scrutiny over the environmental performance and financial management of these companies.
